about

Dubplate 1/1

Deadly Vibrations is a soundinstallation that took place the 17/01/2020. Throughout a 30 minute sequence of sound, the realms of vibration, bass and rhythms are being explored. The piece was produced in an exhibition space during one week. Using the Neutron Synthesizer as the soundsource, the four Subwoofers and two speakers transformed into an extension of the instrument, with which the space itself could be played as well as the very structure of the building. Therefore the soundsystem formed a crucial part of the composition, every alternation changes the whole set up. Throughout sonic modes of storytelling the audience undergoes an intrinsic and intensive bodily experience, during which hallucinatory states or nausea can be evoked. The body becomes a transducer of vibration - a vibrational event.

Accompanied by a selection of texts that give an insight into different perspectives connected to unsound, the sonic sequence reacts to and correlates with these contents. Parts of the sequence are captured as a dubplate - vibration captured as an artefact: Vibration Weapon.

Unsound is a term borrowed from the research unit AUDINT, that they use to describe the field of peripheral sonic perception.´The term refers not only to what humans can not hear, but also to non-cognitive, inhuman phenomena connected to the unknown, icluding the hum, hyperrhythmia, and auditory hallucinations´(Unsound:Undead).

Drawing from Steve Goodman´s book on Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect and the Ecology of Fear, Unsound methods is an ongoing investigation of the sonic realm, focussing on deployments of sound as a weapon.
Taking on Goodmans´s claim, that „vibration plays a key role on this complex and invisible battlefield – a zone in which commercial, military scientific, artistic and popular musical interests are increasingly invested“ (Sonic Warfare), unsound methods wants to contribute to a mapping of the historical and current deployments, potentials and dangers of sound.
